For the Culture! | Podcast Edition
Think podcasts are for stuffy NPR finactics and lovers of BBC Radio? Think again.
These 10 shows created by Black hosts will have you looking forward to your commute.
You Got Detention
Hosted by my two cousins (Chayes & Big Mike) and their friend from high school (BMo), this podcast will have you cracking up as they reminisce on the high school hallways, hand out detention slips to the likes of Y’all’s President, make you question your love life about why that hs sweetheart is now in your dm’s, and shed a harsh light on the black culture that was normally bypassed during history lesson.
A Seat at the Table
It is a mighty, magical day when you’re finally grown enough to have a seat at the table! Listen up on Gail’s take on the dumb things our favorite celebrities do and how we can learn from their mistakes.
How can I handle all this hot tea?! Join DM and Ebby as they give their weekly messy, juicy highlights of the hottest celebrity tea and trending television from Married to Medicine to Black Ink Crew.
The Friend Zone
Because “Who in the hell wants a musty brain?” Every Wednesday, our lovely friends Hey Fran Hey, Sir Dustin Ross and Mr. Music Man Assante gather round to create dialogue for the importance of mental hygiene as well as discuss unspoken black issues and how to “protect [our] magic”, latest albums and mixtapes, and recaps of our guilty pleasures of ratchet reality television.
From throwing shade to spilling tea, unless you are Queen Bey, no one is safe from Kid Fury and Crissle as they give their weekly “read” on all things pop culture. While most of the show entails the two roasting each other and other kinfolk, we get to see some “Black Excellence” for those doing the damn thing in the black community, and listeners get to be told “Just Break Up With Him,” as they ask heartfelt questions about their dating lives.
Pull up a chair and gather ‘round the kitchen table as our cousins Jade and Keia give us advice on how to get grown, because we so desperately need help on how to properly “adult,” how to control our tempers with Petty Peeves, and teach us how to love and take care of ourselves with lessons in Black Women Self Care.
Let’s talk about sex, baby! Get inside your fav black celeb’s bedrooms with Angela Lee as she gets the D(irty) secrets you’ve been dying to know about what goes in the sheets.
For every and all nerds, FanBros hosted by DJ BenHaMeen and Tatiana King Jones, allows us to not be ashamed of our love for comics and wanting to be technologically advanced, as well as keeping an ear out in these streets for controversial topics around our black culture.
Black Girl Nerds
Yes, sis, you can be educated and be black, too. This podcast is where our girls encourage us to be the queens we know we are, all while acknowledging it is completely okay to work hard for a piece of paper and a handshake, and be obsessed with Star Trek.
Two Dope Queens
We cannot give a list of podcasts hosted by black people without mentioning two of the dopest queens to ever grace the airways. Be ready to ke-ke and ha-ha along with Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams as they host a live show featuring their favorite comedians of all backgrounds for stories about sex, romance and race.
